and we're going to go over the fiscal cliff. he doesn't think a deal gets done. where do you put the odds at this point? >> well, you know, it's a great question. i give it about a 40% chance we could pass something of some magnitude. not a grand plan, but some magnitude. keep in mind again, you know, people call it a fiscal cliff. when you go off a cliff you usually die. my view is there are challenges in front of us. we've had them before. this is pretty significant. but we have a plan in place. no one really likes it, but at the end of the day come january, these things start to happen. the deficit gets a reduction because the tax cuts go away, the budget cuts go into play. the question is are we going to have the wherewithal to give some long-term certainty to the market so they don't have this up and down action of congress. after four years in congress i have to tell you it's one of the most disturbing thing i've seen, the lack of foresite of looking two, three, four, five years down the road. everyone plays to the next week. give it about a 40% chance of some element. the big quest

from that so-called fiscal cliff. there appears to be very little movement toward any kind of deal. president obama is using the bully-pulpit to appeal to the american people to push for immediate action to push the tax cuts for everybody except for those earning more than $250,000 a year. in his saturday address, he stressed the urgency of the situation. >> if congress does nothing, every family will see their income taxes automatically go up at the beginning of next year. a typical middle-class family of four will see income taxes rise by $2200. we can't let that happen. a families can't afford it and neither can our economy. >> reporter: republicans led by house speaker john boehner says he should quit campaigning and take care of the business at hand. republicans say they are willing to consider raising more revenue but they want to see spending cuts to go along with it. >> we need to hear they are willing to make spending cuts now, not promises of spending cuts sometime if the future. to me the tidal waves that are coming at us is social security and medicare and the new healt

think some of the concern on the fiscal cliff is overbrought? >> you know what they are probably going to come up with something. if not on january 1st, then they will come up with some deal to make a deal, kicking the can down the road. >> gregg: which is congress's job. [ laughter ] >> and more important than the fiscal cliff a lot of investment houses are lowering their growth outlook. that is because the owners of small businesses, they are the drivers of the economy. they hire. right now, one out of five cut jobs in the next 12 months. one out of three is cutting capital spending. if there is no jobs we don't have consumer spending that is 70% of g.d.p., so this is really steam rolling. it is frightening. >> gregg: i was reading economists and they say household purchases, wages in salary going down, durable goods decreasing now we have manufacturing coming out on monday as well as jobs report on thursday or friday? >> yeah, the jobs report is expected to be very dismal, about 75,000 net jobs. some of that is because of sandy, but housing market is rebuilding, it's recovering. tha

a shark, but it is about a cliff, the looming so-called fiscal cliff would trigger across the board tax hikes and spending cuts if no deal is reached. but what would happen to home values, if certain tax benefits disappear? four are drastically cut. and carolyn, the financial analyst joins me right now with details. carolyn, always good to see youment what about this? how will this affect home owners if we go off this show called fiscal cliff? >> kelly, you know, at this point there is so much speculation around this fiscal cliff, and you're talking about the housing market. there is talk about what would happen if some of these real estate write-offs are at least reduced or, you know, somehow changed. the housing market is one area that's actually shown positives in the past year or so. any sort of change with that to the mortgage interest deduction and also, any change, possibly in property taxes and those deductions could have a negative effect on the economy. but you know, kelly, there are things that are in our control, if you will. it seems like things are out of control with thes
